What the emmigrants have to face in the United States.

The most difficult is to get an emigration permit, because it takes long time and you have demonstrated that you qualify. In addition, we have to have a place where we can stay while find a job.

I arrived to the United States, when I was 16 years old and I had to live in my sister house, the situation was so uncomfortable, because the apartment was so small and I came with my two brothers and my other sister. My sister in the U.S was already married by the time that we arrived we didn’t know her husband. He had different custom than us, because he is from other country. In the beginning everything was good, but three months later changed, I had to work as babysitter of my niece without pay, because I had to contribute with the bills and food expenses. I didn’t have any time to go school. My life changed since I came to the United States. I mature early.

Another situation that we have deal with are the government agencies. It is complicated, because many immigrants don’t speak English and when they go to there they have limited expression and less understanding so the process will take more time. In addition, some time there is discrimination and the workers ignore you or put it more difficult for us. They don’t care if you have to come back many time again.

In comparison in my home country Dominican Republic the influence is necessary to get the fast and correct service that we need. In addition, if you pay some amount of money we can get everything that we want with less effort, but for those people that don’t have this requirement the situation will be horrible. They have to wait long time and make big lines, because that way it is. We go there to get something that we need, we have to be patient and bring a battle of water to bear with warmth, and maybe if you don’t show anger they will help you.
