Verizon co-opts Internet memes and their stars in one fell swoop

Jamilah King:

Verizon has invoked [Bed Intruder “star”] Antoine Dodson to make its case against regulating Internet service providers and how they control the flow of content on the Web.

For those of you spending your time NOT cruising the Internet at every given moment, the Bed Intruder song is an auto-tuned version of a new report starring Dodson, in which he threatens a late-night intruder during a local TV news report.

That Verizon used the popularity of the song — which arose despite big corporations’ attempts to shove their own self-produced content in our faces — is pretty crappy. But the fact that Dodson himself is made to look like a spokesperson is just dumb.
