Sir Tim on Mobile Data for All

When a $10 phone you can afford has a browser, it’s truly a shame that a data plan is considered a luxury.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee told an audience of Nokia developers and journalists today that “twenty percent of the world’s population uses the web, yet 80 percent of the world has access to a cellular data signal.”

If it’s a given that we need to connect everyone to the Internet (and I think it is), then we need to figure out how to connect those folks with simple phones.

Berners-Lee favors the creation of a free, low-bandwidth and neutral mobile data plan that connects folks with cheap — but ubiquitous — phones. ‘

It’s a great idea. Maybe a teeny bit politically challenging.
