Motorola Xoom: Adding Insult to Injury

Nothing quite says “cutting edge” like normal embedded functions being disabled so that Verizon can force everybody to have a data plan — though Verizon does the same thing for smartphones, preventing users from saving money and going Wi-Fi only.

Not only is Verizon busy throttling iPhone users’ data, but it’s data plan for the Motorola Xoom Android tablet is just plan awful: You can buy 1GB a month costs $20 (and more GB for more $$), but — get this — you can’t activate Wi-Fi on the device unless you have a data plan.

Karl Bode points out that this is how cell phone plans work. Fine. But there are two problems with that:

1) Cell phone plans are bad too;

2) The Xoom isn’t a cell phone.

Verizon is just knocking them out of the park these days.
